Social Presence Theory

Social Presence Theory explains how people perceive each other's presence in mediated communications. It's easier for people to feel engaged when they see communication technology conveying social cues and facilitating real-time interactions.

Media Richness Theory

The Media Richness Theory examines how different communication media are different in how they convey information, which reduces ambiguity. Communication mediums should be chosen based on the complexity and ambiguity of the message, with rich media better suited for ambiguous tasks and lean media for simpler ones.
